Club Cabernet

October 2017

Dear Cabernet Aficionado, Harvest is underway, and as I write this letter, we are bringing our State Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon into our fermentation barn here at the winery. The fruit was picked before the sun rose and came in nice and cool. This harvest, Mother Nature has given us the warmest summer ever. Our viticulturists have been busy employing multiple techniques so that the vines give fully ripened, balanced fruit. This included shoot positioning to protect clusters, shade cloth over clusters on the afternoon side of the vines, and extensive irrigation monitoring. Our first fermentations are underway, and early indications show great promise from all the extra attention. I believe that the heat of the vintage will show through and give us voluptuous-but-structured wines that we will enjoy for years to come. We will all certainly remember the weather of 2017. If you decide to come and see us during the exciting harvest season, we hope you'll make time for our brand new Terroir Tasting.  One of the best ways to understand the unique expressions of each of our Single-Vineyard Cabernets is to taste them side-by-side. It truly is a north-to-south Napa Valley tasting experience like no other. Give us a call at 707-967-9600 to reserve a spot or to scoop up a few more bottles of your favorite October club wines.  Remember, your 20% member savings continues for 30 days after you receive your shipment!

2014 Nickel & Nickel
State Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon

Yountville, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

State Ranch is located northeast of the town of Yountville. The 23–acre vineyard is divided into two parcels by State Lane Road and consists of both older and younger vines. Many excellent wines are produced from this area, in part due to the rocky, loam soil which has excellent drainage throughout the year. The vines, as well as the clusters, are moderate in size and the vineyard gets full sun throughout the day. As the young vines mature, we harvest many different clones to make the final wine. Nickel & Nickel selects fruit from 11 acres of the vineyard.

Sensory Evaluation

The 2014 State Ranch Cabernet has aromas of wild berries, violets and crushed stone. Enticing blackberry and blueberry fruits mingle with notes of minerality and spice, surrounded by toasty oak that complements the fruit. 2014 Nickel & Nickel
Beatty Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon

Howell Mountain, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Located atop Howell Mountain, Beatty Ranch typically gets to enjoy the warmth of the sun when summer fog lines the valley floor. While the fruit ripens easily, we must wait for mature tannins to emerge. The red, rocky soils are ideal for producing moderate-sized vines, and this vineyard is comprised of four different clones that each provide a unique flavor profile to the overall wine.

Sensory Evaluation

The 2014 Beatty Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon offers enchanting aromas of plum, cassis, olive and char. Red and black fruit flavors mingle beautifully with green olive, basil and pepper. A vibrant acidity marries with plush, coating tannins that expand through the midpalate to a finely contoured finish. Additional Notes

2014 Nickel & Nickel
Quarry Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Rutherford, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

The 25-acre Quarry Vineyard climbs the slopes above the Silverado Trail on the east side of Rutherford. The name comes from the old quarry that was the source of a white rock used in the ghost winery that still stands beside the vineyard. Nickel & Nickel makes wine from three distinct hillside blocks, totaling about 11 acres, each experiencing its own unique soil and exposure. The white, rocky loam soils are well drained, and the vines are of moderate vigor. Cluster and berry size varies from block to block, but all are small to moderate. This vineyard has full exposure to the afternoon sun.

Sensory Evaluation

An exotic combination of earthy notes and jammy fruits gives our 2014 Quarry Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon a remarkable Rutherford expression. This wine has a deep bouquet of black cherry, green olive, mineral and earth. A medley of plum and cherry fruits mingle with olive, herb and black tea. Dark fruit and charred oak accentuate these flavors and rich, coating tannins carry the wine into an expansive finish.

2014 Nickel & Nickel
Hayne Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

St. Helena, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

The Hayne Vineyard is situated in St. Helena at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains and is well known for its single vineyard wines from the site. The vines are small to moderate in size due to the gravelly, loam soils and the vineyard produces small yields. The warm St. Helena temperatures are ideal for producing rich, jammy fruit and this vineyard tends to be picked at the beginning of harvest each year.

Sensory Evaluation

Rich and complex, the 2014 Hayne Cabernet Sauvignon offers aromas of fresh berries and cedar. Bing cherry and plum flavors blend with subtle notes of dust, graphite, and toasty French oak. The beauty of this wine is revealed upon the first sip as the round tannins provide power laced with finesse. The plush fruit brings enjoyment upon release, but a little bottle age will reveal the hidden flavors lying beneath the surface.
