Dear Cabernet Enthusiast, The valley floor is green from the late winter rains, golden mustard is flowering among the vines. In the cellar, we've just moved several stunning 2018 vintage Cabernets from barrel into bottle. While their flavors continue to develop and evolve, we are very excited to share some exceptional 2017 Napa Valley Cabernets with you. This includes the 94+ Nickel & Nickel Element 28 Cabernet Sauvignon, which you won't find on store shelves or restaurant lists. Your shipment also includes our 2017 Dragonfly Vineyard Cabernet along with the 2017 Bella Union Cabernet, a recent Wine Enthusiast Cellar Selection, with 95 points. While we're proud of the critical acclaim our 2017 vintage Cabernets have garnered, we don't make wines for the scores. We make them for the privilege it is to bring compelling flavor and richness to your tables, and the joy and memories we get to help create with you. All three of these selections do just that, and they promise to gain complexity for years to come. Cheers,

2017 Nickel & Nickel
Dragonfly Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

St. Helena, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

The diminutive, four-acre Dragonfly Vineyard is located in St. Helena at the base of Spring Mountain. Old timers know this magical place as a “banana belt” microclimate, as its ideal summer temperatures allow the vines to develop their notable ripe and jammy fruit. The vines benefit from the site’s deep, gravelly loam soils and gentle southern exposure, and the vineyard is one of the first to be harvested each year.

Sensory Evaluation

Our 2017 Dragonfly Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is filled with gorgeous aromas of raspberry, cherry and Santa Rosa plum fused with elegant floral notes of violets that immediately dance out of the glass. The palate begins with abundant juicy fruit flavors that are well-layered and silky as hints of baking spices add further richness. Providing a fullmouth feel, this wine transitions to a finish with wonderful persistence.

2017 Nickel & Nickel
Element 28 Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Element 28 is named after the owner of the vineyard, Erik Nickel, who ingeniously came up with the name Element 28, which is “nickel” on the periodic table. Located high in the hills across from Lake Henessey, this vineyard has a nice western exposure, comprised of shallow, gravelly loam soils which produce small vines with loose clusters and small berries. Three different clones offer a variety of concentrated fruit flavors that are hallmarks of this hillside vineyard.

Sensory Evaluation

The 2017 Element 28 Cabernet Sauvignon presents ample amounts of plum and blackberry fruits, surrounded by notes of clove, vanilla and cardamom. Delicious boysenberry and blackberry fruit flavors are supported by a firm core of tannin. Soft stony-mineral notes add dimension to this wine that suggest this is an age-worthy wine.

2017 Bella Union
Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Bella Union was founded by the partners of Far Niente to specialize in the art of blending Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The cornerstone of the blend is our 25-acre vineyard in Rutherford, along Bella Oaks Lane, a country road that was historically called Bella Union. The vineyard is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon in well-drained loam, and the vines range from 20 – 30 years of age. Classic varietals of Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot sourced from select Napa Valley vineyards complete the blend.

Sensory Evaluation

The 2017 Bella Union is filled with luscious aromas of cherry cola, anise, and baking spices. Tension is exhibited on the palate as this wine is both fruit forward and restrained. Black cherry, blueberry and other briary fruit flavors guide the wine’s bright midpalate, finishing with hints of cocoa and resolved tannins.
