Club Cabernet

December 2018

Dear Cabernet Aficionado, With another harvest freshly under our belts, we are thrilled by the quality of fruit we brought in this year. After a near-perfect growing season filled with warm days and cool nights, our vineyards enjoyed a slow, complete ripening of fruit, resulting in excellent structure and flavor profiles. After welcoming the remaining fruit into the cellar, we begin the next phase of our labor of love and we look forward to sharing the finished 2018 wines with you. In the meantime, we are delighted to share the enclosed wines with you and hope you find an opportunity to enjoy them among family and friends. From harvest to the holidays, we hold this time of year close and invite you to raise a glass as we toast this special season! Cheers,

2015 Nickel & Nickel
Copper Streak Cabernet Sauvignon

Stags Leap District, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Copper Streak Vineyard soils are composed of Perkins gravelly loam mixed with red, copper-like streaks, which is how the vineyard got its name. The vines receive a western exposure and are of moderate size, yielding loose clusters with small berries. The climate in Stags Leap is very warm. Mid-afternoon breezes, however, sweep in to cool things down, allowing for excellent ripening. We produce wine from seven of the vineyard’s 30 acres.

Sensory Evaluation

Ripe and concentrated, the 2015 Copper Streak Cabernet Sauvignon artfully balances dark fruit and bright acidity. Aromas of pomegranate and cassis mix with spicy, toasty oak. Flavors of Bing cherry, cassis and rich herbs are enhanced by fine, ample tannins and a richly textured finish.

2015 Nickel & Nickel
Quicksilver Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Rutherford, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

The Quicksilver Vineyard lies on the western Rutherford bench, in the acclaimed area on Bella Oaks Lane. The soils are predominantly well drained loams that produce vines of moderate size. These older vines were planted to the California sprawl system, with wider spacing and a divided canopy, giving great exposure to the fruit. Minimal irrigation is needed to obtain maximum fruit potential.

Sensory Evaluation

A stunning pop of red fruit—the signature of this vineyard—opens this decadent, concentrated vintage. The 2015 Quicksilver has slightly darker fruit flavors than its preceding vintage while still retaining the juicy cherry and plum notes we have to come to love from this western Rutherford site. Elegant floral notes and a mouthwatering natural acidity brightens the palate while rich tannins carry the flavors into a long, persistent finish.

Kelham Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Oakville, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Kelham Vineyard is a 52-acre planting located at the base of the western hills of Oakville. Nickel & Nickel receives fruit from seven acres planted to rootstocks which offer slightly different nuances to the blend. The soil is comprised of a well-drained, clay loam, which produces vines and clusters of moderate size. Some canopy management is performed to allow speckled light on the grapes which, combined with Oakville’s warm climate, is perfect for slowly ripening the fruit.

Sensory Evaluation

Exotic aromas of earth, herb and tar continue to evolve in the glass. On the palate, this wine opens with wild berry fruits, herbs, tobacco and pepper. The French oak adds a lovely toast and char component which complements the fruit, while rounded tannins allow this wine to be enjoyed earlier than normal for this vineyard.

2015 Nickel & Nickel
State Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon

Yountville, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

State Ranch is located northeast of the town of Yountville. The 23-acre vineyard is divided into two parcels by State Lane Road and consists of both older and younger vines. Many excellent wines are produced from this area, in part due to the rocky, loam soil which has excellent drainage throughout the year. The vines, as well as the clusters, are moderate in size and the vineyard gets full sun throughout the day. As the young vines mature, we will be harvesting many different clones to make the final wine. Nickel & Nickel selects fruit from 11 acres of the vineyard.

Sensory Evaluation

Aromas of wild berries, violets and crushed stone open onto a palate of abundant blackberry, blueberry and cranberry flavors. Notes of cardamom and clove complement the fruit and rich, velvety tannins broaden the palate. This wonderfully fragrant and generously textured Cabernet will continue to evolve beautifully over the next decade.

Cave Collection Cabernet Sauvignon

Oakville, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

The 100-acre Martin Stelling Vineyard, located behind the winery in Oakville, is the cornerstone of the Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon program. The flat acreage uniformly produces wines with supple, sweet tannins and bright, forward fruit. Halter Valley, which is the extension of the vineyard that starts into foothills of the Mayacamas, is composed of gently rolling knolls. This section of the vineyard includes more diverse individual blocks that provide wines of great tannin and structure. This vineyard, together with a small contribution from the Sullenger Vineyard at Nickel & Nickel, produces Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon.

Sensory Evaluation

Bright with ripe, purple fruits, this 2006 cabernet will impress with complex, layered aromas of black licorice and briar patch. 2008 Dolce
(750ml)

Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Dolce’s 20-acre vineyard is located in Coombsville, east of the city of Napa, and is situated at the base of the Vaca Mountains. The volcanic soil is loose and well drained, and the west-facing vineyard is protected from the prevailing winds so that the damp, morning fog of autumn—a very important factor in the development of Botrytis cinerea—hangs longer amongst the vines, often until midday. A combination of high humidity followed by drying conditions encourages the growth of Botrytis. As the mold develops, its coverage is seemingly random with individual berries succumbing to Botrytis at different rates, if at all.

Sensory Evaluation

The 2008 Dolce offers aromas of spiced poached pear, peach cobbler and orange marmalade. The entry is honeyed, followed by creamy flavors which echo the aromas on the nose. The smooth and coating texture leads to a mouthwatering finish that compels a second sip.

2017 Far Niente
Estate Bottled Chardonnay

Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Far Niente Chardonnay is a blend of superlative Napa Valley vineyards located in Coombsville, a cool growing region nestled in the rolling countryside and protected by the hills east of the city of Napa. The combination of these spectacular vineyards results in the subtle, tropical flavors, complex aromas and uncommon richness that have long been associated with Far Niente Chardonnay.

Sensory Evaluation

Aromas of melon, sweet citrus and white blossom floral layered with notes of flint, yeast and sweetly toasted oak. A smooth and focused entry is followed by a silky midpalate with ripe flavors of honeydew and lemon, supported by just of touch of wet stone, yeast and toasted hazelnuts.
