January 2020 Dear Single Vineyard Enthusiast, Not only are we kicking off the new year with the very first shipment of 2017 wines, but we're sending you three of our highest-scoring Cabernets from the vintage. This includes the 94+ Element 28 Cabernet Sauvignon, which you won’t find on store shelves or restaurant lists. We grow just 5 ½ acres of this hillside Cabernet, and the yields are exceptionally small and concentrated. It’s what we expect from the shallow, gravelly soils of this hillside site overlooking Lake Hennessey, and the wines we make from here have pure dark fruit flavors and refined tannins that promise to gain complexity for years to come. We're so excited to warm up your winter tables with all four of these single-vineyard favorites. They're dynamic and so very expressive of the Napa Valley vineyards in which they were grown. We hope you’ll be joining us to toast and taste these wines at our Oakville winery sometime this year! Cheers,

2017 Nickel & Nickel
State Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon

Yountville, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

State Ranch is located northeast of the town of Yountville. The 23-acre vineyard is divided into two parcels by State Lane Road and consists of both older and younger vines. Many excellent wines are produced from this area, in part due to the rocky, loam soil which has excellent drainage throughout the year. The vines, as well as the clusters, are moderate in size and the vineyard gets full sun throughout the day. As the young vines mature, we will be harvesting many different clones to make the final wine. Nickel & Nickel selects fruit from 11 acres of the vineyard.

Sensory Evaluation

This wine demonstrates intrigue from the very start, with dark red and blue fruits on the nose. A medley of mixed berry flavors are complemented by subtle mineral notes. The texture is incredibly plush and velvety, showing ample balance, depth and complexity from beginning to end.

2017 Nickel & Nickel
Element 28

Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Element 28 is named after the owner of the vineyard, Erik Nickel, who ingeniously came up with the name Element 28, which is “nickel” on the periodic table. Located high in the hills across from Lake Henessey, this vineyard has a nice western exposure, comprised of shallow, gravelly loam soils which produce small vines with loose clusters and small berries. Three different clones offer a variety of concentrated fruit flavors that are hallmarks of this hillside vineyard.

Sensory Evaluation

The 2017 Element 28 Cabernet Sauvignon presents ample amounts of plum and blackberry fruits, surrounded by notes of clove, vanilla and cardamom. Delicious boysenberry and blackberry fruit flavors are supported by a firm core of tannin. Soft stony-mineral notes add dimension to this wine that suggest this is an age-worthy wine.

2017 Nickel & Nickel
Suscol Ranch

Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

The nine-acre Suscol Ranch is located in Jamieson Canyon, south of the city of Napa. The area is very cool, with dense fog early in the season and windy conditions all year long. Planted on a gentle, north-facing knoll of deep, loamy soil, the vines are cordon trained to give the grapes maximum sun exposure. The cool conditions allow the fruit to mature slowly, gracefully developing flavors and mature tannins.

Sensory Evaluation

Enticing aromas of dark plum, green olive and cedar spring from the glass at first swirl. Earthy notes of tobacco leaf, olive, tar and spice blend elegantly with the dark, ripe fruit. Lush, velvety tannins that expand upon the initial sip and develop with richness through the finish. The 2017 Suscol Ranch Merlot pairs beautifully with food and is ready to drink now, but can also be cellared for later enjoyment.

C.C. Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon

Rutherford, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

C.C. Ranch is planted in Rutherford, along the slope of a knoll west of the Silverado Trail. The vineyard grows classic Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon on well-drained, gravelly loam soil and receives a variety of exposures, depending on the block and location. The vines are well balanced and the canopy is opened up to give good light exposure. Nickel & Nickel produces wine from 15 select acres of this 115-acre vineyard.

Sensory Evaluation

Notes of bright cherry, raspberry and dried herbs waft from the glass with this classic Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon. The entry is bright and elegant, with seductive flavors of red fruit, tobacco leaf and baking spices coating the tongue.
