Single Vineyard Club

November 2018

November 1, 2018 Dear Single Vineyard Enthusiast, With another harvest freshly under our belts here at Nickel & Nickel, we are thrilled with the quality of fruit we brought in this year. After a near-perfect growing season filled with warm days and cool nights, our vineyards enjoyed a slow, complete ripening of fruit, resulting in excellent structure and flavor profiles. After welcoming the remaining fruit into the cellar, we begin the next phase of our labor of love and we look forward to sharing the finished wines with you. In the meantime, we are delighted to share these wines with you, and hope you find a time this season to share them among friends and family. From harvest to the holidays, we hold this time of year close and invite you to raise a glass as we toast this great season! Cheers,

2015 Nickel & Nickel
John C. Sullenger Vineyard® Cabernet Sauvignon

Oakville, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

The home vineyard of Nickel & Nickel, Sullenger Vineyard is situated behind the winery in the heart of Oakville and is named for John C. Sullenger, who settled the farmstead in the 1880’s. The vineyard’s 30 acres of clay loam soil are planted exclusively to Cabernet Sauvignon, with 2 rootstocks and a few different clones which each add a unique element to the resulting wine.

Sensory Evaluation

With its floral aromas mixed with plum and olive, the 2015 John C. Sullenger Cabernet Sauvignon blends juicy and savory notes into an impossible-to-resist perfume. On the palate, dark flavors of black cherry, tobacco, anise and toast are accentuated by a lively yet balanced acidity. These flavors are carried by a rich core of tannins that build on the middle palate, carrying the fruit into a long finish.

2015 Nickel & Nickel
Sori Bricco Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Diamond Mountain District, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

High in the hills of Diamond Mountain, Sori Bricco spans two hillsides with different sun exposures resulting in separate harvest dates across the ranch. The soil is composed of a sandy, gravelly loam and the vines tend to be very small as they struggle against the slopes. The climate is warm in the early spring and these vines are among the first to bud each year. Warm summer months produce nice flavors, while cooler nights offer long hang time to gain tannin maturity each season.

Sensory Evaluation

A strong swirl of the glass releases the fresh aromas of rose petal, raspberry, and red currant that lie within. Abundant rich red fruit flavors are generously supported by spicy oak and vanilla flavors as well as broad tannins. A wine possessing both power and grace, it promises to develop beautifully over the next 15 years.

2015 Nickel & Nickel
Copper Streak Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Stags Leap District, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Copper Streak Vineyard is located in Stags Leap District. The soils are composed of Perkins gravelly loam mixed with red, copper-like streaks, which is how the vineyard got its name. The vines receive a western exposure and are of moderate size, yielding loose clusters with small berries. The climate in Stags Leap is very warm. Mid-afternoon breezes, however, sweep in to cool things down, allowing for excellent ripening. We produce wine from seven of the vineyard’s 30 acres.

Sensory Evaluation

Ripe and concentrated, the 2015 Copper Streak Cabernet Sauvignon artfully balances dark fruit and bright acidity. Aromas of pomegranate and cassis mix with spicy, toasty oak. Flavors of Bing cherry, cassis and rich herbs are enhanced by fine, ample tannins and a richly textured finish.

2014 Dolce
(375ml)

Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Dolce’s 20-acre vineyards are located in Coombsville, east of the city of Napa, and are situated at the base of the Vaca Mountains, which define the eastern border of the valley. The volcanic soil is loose and well drained, and the westfacing vineyard is protected from the prevailing winds so that the damp, morning fog of autumn – a very important factor in the development of Botrytis cinerea – hangs longer amongst the vines, often until midday. A combination of high humidity followed by drying conditions encourages, but does not guarantee, the growth of Botrytis.

Sensory Evaluation

The 2014 Dolce offers lifted tropical fruit notes. Characteristic of Dolce, the fruit-driven flavors follow the promise of the aromatics and an enticing blend of exotic notes are carried long into the finish. Together with notes of ripe, fresh loquat, orange, and apricot, the richness of this vintage is expressed with a vanilla crème brûlée character – reminiscent of bakery smells, and flavors of caramelized custard. This wine’s texture is silky with mouth-filling volume and a long finish carrying the fruitful flavors; altogether this vintage is a delight to the senses.

2006 Far Niente
Cave Collection Cabernet Sauvignon

Oakville, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

The 100-acre Martin Stelling Vineyard, located behind the winery in Oakville, is the cornerstone of the Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon program. The vineyard is composed of two distinct areas. The flat acreage uniformly produces wines with supple, sweet tannins and bright, forward fruit. Halter Valley, which is the extension of the vineyard that starts into foothills of the Mayacamas, is composed of gently rolling knolls. This section of the vineyard includes more diverse individual blocks that provide wines of great tannin and structure.

Sensory Evaluation

Bright with ripe, purple fruits, this 2006 cabernet will impress with complex, layered aromas of black licorice and briar patch. The silky entry progresses along the palate and gives way to dense, velvety chocolate and toast. Full-bodied and concentrated throughout, the wine lingers on with a long, layered finish.

2015 Nickel & Nickel
State Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon

Yountville, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

State Ranch is located northeast of the town of Yountville. The 23-acre vineyard is divided into two parcels by State Lane Road and consists of both older and younger vines. Many excellent wines are produced from this area, in part due to the rocky, loam soil which has excellent drainage throughout the year. The vines, as well as the clusters, are moderate in size and the vineyard gets full sun throughout the day. As the young vines mature, we will be harvesting many different clones to make the final wine. Nickel & Nickel selects fruit from 11 acres of the vineyard.

Sensory Evaluation

Aromas of wild berries, violets and crushed stone open onto a palate of abundant blackberry, blueberry and cranberry flavors. Notes of cardamom and clove complement the fruit and rich, velvety tannins broaden the palate. This wonderfully fragrant and generously textured Cabernet will continue to evolve beautifully over the next decade.

2011 Nickel & Nickel
Kelham Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Oakville, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Kelham Vineyard is a 52-acre planting located at the base of the western hills of Oakville. Nickel & Nickel receives fruit from seven acres planted to rootstocks which offer slightly different nuances to the blend. The soil is comprised of a well-drained, clay loam, which produces vines and clusters of moderate size. Some canopy management is performed to allow speckled light on the grapes which, combined with Oakville’s warm climate, is perfect for slowly ripening the fruit.

Sensory Evaluation

Exotic aromas of earth, herb and tar continue to evolve in the glass. On the palate, this wine opens with wild berry fruits, herbs, tobacco and pepper. The French oak adds a lovely toast and char component which complements the fruit, while rounded tannins allow this wine to be enjoyed earlier than normal for this vineyard.

Stags Leap District, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Copper Streak Vineyard is located in a protected hollow at the base of the palisades in the Stags Leap District. The soils are composed of Perkins gravelly loam mixed with red, copper-like streaks, which is how the vineyard got its name. The vines receive a western exposure and are of moderate size, yielding loose clusters with small berries. The climate in Stags Leap is very warm; however, midafternoon breezes sweep in to cool things down, allowing for excellent ripening. Nickel & Nickel Copper Streak Cabernet is produced from seven of the vineyard’s 30 acres.

Sensory Evaluation

The personality of this vineyard continues to shine with this vintage. The 2012 Copper Streak has an abundance of dark fruit flavors blended with earth and spice. Berry and cassis layered with cocoa and sweet herbs create an exciting combination of flavors. This vintage is slightly more structured, with a luxurious, mouthwatering texture. 2016 Bella Union
Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Bella Union was founded by the partners of Far Niente to specialize in the art of blending Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The cornerstone of the blend is our 25-acre vineyard in Rutherford, along Bella Oaks Lane, a country road that was historically called Bella Union. The vineyard is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon in well-drained loam, and the vines range from 20 – 30 years of age. Classic varietals of Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot sourced from select Napa Valley vineyards complete the blend.

Sensory Evaluation

The 2016 Bella Union opens with inviting aromas of black cherry, dark plum, blueberry, and cassis with intimations of warm, toasty oak, vanilla, and baking spices. 2008 Dolce

Dolce’s 20-acre vineyard is located in Coombsville, east of the city of Napa, and is situated at the base of the Vaca Mountains, which define the eastern border of the valley. A combination of high humidity followed by drying conditions encourages, but does not guarantee, the growth of Botrytis. As the mold develops, its coverage is seemingly random with individual berries succumbing to Botrytis at different rates, if at all.

2016 EnRoute
"Les Pommiers" Pinot Noir

Our Northern Spy Vineyard in Russian River Valley’s Green Valley AVA was an abandoned apple orchard that was groomed specifically for EnRoute. We are thrilled with the quality of the fruit coming from this site, which grows on the region’s famous Goldridge soils. Pommard 5, Mt. Eden, Swan, 2A and Dijon clones 115 and 777 are planted on 101-14 rootstock with 4 x 7 spacing in this vineyard. Our Amber Ridge Vineyard is located on rolling terrain in the upper Middle Reach area of the Russian River Valley. Planted with bilateral vertical trellising, the clonal mix includes Pommard 5, Calera and Dijon clones 115, 667 and 777 using 101-14 rootstock to limit vigor.

Sensory Evaluation

The 2016 EnRoute Les Pommiers possesses the luxurious perfume aromatics and rich textures that we love about Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley. On the nose, aromas of ripe cherry and plum are complemented by notes of earth, sage and forest floor. Generous-yet-soft red-fruit flavors expand on the palate, with elegant tannins that are the definition of silky.
