2016 Nickel & Nickel
John. C. Sullenger Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Oakville, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

The home vineyard of Nickel & Nickel, Sullenger Vineyard is situated behind the winery in the heart of Oakville and is named for John C. Sullenger, who settled the farmstead in the 1880’s. The vineyard’s 30 acres of clay loam soil are planted exclusively to Cabernet Sauvignon, with 2 rootstocks and a few different clones which each add a unique element to the resulting wine.

Sensory Evaluation

The 2016 growing season proceeded as usual for Napa Valley with a nice spring that led to a warm summer. Budbreak was about five days later than last year and this trend continued throughout the season. Slightly cooler weather in May lengthened the bloom window but warm summer days in June and July helped the vines catch up to normal. The crop looked good with clusters that had a nice leaf coverage allowing for speckled light. August brought both cool and hot weather, so we kept a close eye on each block.

2016 Nickel & Nickel
Rock Cairn Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Oakville, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Planted in 1984, Rock Cairn Vineyard lies near the southern edge of the Oakville appellation, east of Highway 29 and north of the town of Yountville. The 30-acre vineyard is named for the “cairns,” or piles of rocks, that were formed long ago when Indians traversed the hills and would place a rock on the pile as an offering for safe passage. The site is comprised of deep, gravelly loam with a western exposure, and the vines produce very concentrated fruit late in the season. Nickel & Nickel selects grapes from nine acres of the vineyard.

Sensory Evaluation

The 2016 Rock Cairn Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a fragrant plum and black cherry perfume, along with the subtlest hints of dried sage and portobello. The wine has layers of luscious black fruit flavors with firm tannins that envelop the entire palate and a refreshing brightness on the finish. With its ripe fruit and beautiful tannin structure, this wine promises to age gracefully for years to come.

2016 Nickel & Nickel
Beatty Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon

Howell Mountain, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Located atop Howell Mountain, Beatty Ranch typically gets to enjoy the warmth of the sun when summer fog lines the valley floor. While the fruit ripens easily, we must wait for mature tannins to emerge. The red, rocky soils are ideal for producing moderate-sized vines, and this vineyard is comprised of four different clones that each provide a unique flavor profile to the overall wine.

Sensory Evaluation

An intriguing assortment of herbal notes (ranging from watermelon rind to black olive) and dark ripe fruits like boysenberry, cherry, and plum contribute to a dynamic expression of flavors in the 2016 Beatty Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine enters the palate with a vibrant acidity and purity of fruit, giving way to structured tannins and underpinnings of toasty oak.

2015 Dolce
375ml

Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Dolce’s 20-acre vineyards are located in Coombsville, east of the city of Napa, and are situated at the base of the Vaca Mountains, which define the eastern border of the valley. The volcanic soil is loose and well drained, and the west-facing vineyard is protected from the prevailing winds so that the damp, morning fog of autumn—a very important factor in the development of Botrytis cinerea—hangs longer amongst the vines, often until midday. A combination of high humidity followed by drying conditions encourages, but does not guarantee, the growth of Botrytis. As the mold develops, its coverage is seemingly random with individual berries succumbing to Botrytis at different rates, if at all.

Sensory Evaluation

The 2015 Dolce is fresh and fruitful, with aromas of orange, lime, and apricot along with sweet floral notes of honeysuckle. This Dolce lands on the palate with a coating and pleasing thickness that carries the citrus flavors long into the finish. Key lime pie comes to mind as bakery spices combine with a creamy texture and mouthwatering citrus flavors.

2017 EnRoute
"Les Pommiers" Pinot Noir

Russian River Valley

Vineyard Description

Our Northern Spy Vineyard in Russian River Valley’s Green Valley AVA was an abandoned apple orchard that was groomed specifically for EnRoute. We are thrilled with the quality of the fruit coming from this site, which grows on the region’s famous Goldridge soils. Pommard 5, Mt. Eden, Swan, 2A and Dijon clones 115 and 777 are planted on 101-14 rootstock with 4 x 7 spacing in this vineyard. Our Amber Ridge Vineyard is located on rolling terrain in the upper Middle Reach area of the Russian River Valley. Planted with bilateral vertical trellising, the clonal mix includes Pommard 5, Calera and Dijon clones 115, 667 and 777 using 101-14 rootstock to limit vigor. Manzana Vineyard continues to play an important role in the Les Pommiers blend, with its hillside fruit planted in Green Valley to Dijon clones 114, 115 and Pommard 5.

Sensory Evaluation

The nose instantly fills with luscious aromas of juicy ripe red cherry, raspberry, star jasmine, with a light spice and mineral earthiness that while subdued, is still stark. Upon entry, the palate is silky and layered with flavors that are reflective of this wine’s aromatics—bright red fruit, rose petal and a touch of forest floor. The 2017 “Les Pommiers” boasts an exceptional purity of fruit, flavor and expression as it culminates in a bright, mouthwatering finish.

Sensory Evaluation

The 2017 Bella Union is filled with luscious aromas of cherry cola, anise, and baking spices. Tension is exhibited on the palate as this wine is both fruit forward and restrained. Branding Iron Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Oakville, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Named for the branding iron owned by the proprietor, the eight-and-a-half acre Branding Iron Vineyard lies in western Oakville, close to the base of the Mayacamas Mountains. The vineyard is comprised of well-drained clay loam and the vines are vertically trellised to maximize sunlight and open the canopy. The area’s warm climate and sun exposure in both the morning and afternoon is perfect for slowly ripening the fruit, which often benefits from a long hang time.

Sensory Evaluation

With its bright red fruit and floral aromas complemented by a bouquet of clove, anise and cardamom, the 2016 Branding Iron Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon offers a beautiful balance of fresh fruit and spice. Quarry Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Rutherford, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

The 25-acre Quarry Vineyard climbs the slopes above the Silverado Trail on the east side of Rutherford. The name comes from the old quarry that was the source of a white rock used in the ghost winery that still stands beside the vineyard. Three distinct hillside blocks, each experiencing its own unique soil and exposure, are harvested from this vineyard. The white, rocky loam soils are well drained, and the vines are of moderate vigor. Cluster and berry size varies from block to block, but all are small to moderate. This vineyard has full exposure to the afternoon sun.

2011 Nickel & Nickel
Copper Streak Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Stags Leap District, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Copper Streak Vineyard is located in a protected hollow at the base of the palisades in Stags Leap District. The soils are composed of Perkins gravelly loam mixed with red, copper-like streaks, which is how the vineyard got its name. The vines receive a western exposure and are of moderate size, yielding loose clusters with small berries. The climate in Stags Leap is very warm; however, mid afternoon breezes sweep in to cool things down, allowing for excellent ripening. Nickel & Nickel Copper Streak Cabernet is produced from seven of the vineyard’s 30 acres.

Sensory Evaluation

The 2011 Copper Streak offers one of the richest textures of the vintage. Aromas of blackberry and cedar lend way to dark fruit flavors of berry and cassis which blend nicely with notes of chocolate, tobacco and herbs. The middle palate is dense with rich flavors, depth and complexity. This wine is beautifully focused now, yet will reward those with the patience to allow a few years in the cellar.
