Single Vineyard Club

September 2018

Dear Single Vineyard Enthusiast, After a fantastic summer, we are moving into the time of year that I adore: Harvest. It is when all the work in the vineyards literally bears fruit and the smell of fermentations bring the winery alive. While we are busy bringing another vintage into the winery, we are excited to share these single-vineyard selections from our 2015 Nickel & Nickel vintage with you. It’s a stunning – and extremely limited – vintage that will age beautifully…though you won’t go wrong pulling the cork on any of these now. Best Wishes,

Dirk Hampson

2015 Nickel & Nickel
Branding Iron Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Oakville, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Named for the branding iron owned by the proprietor, the eight-anda-half acre Branding Iron Vineyard lies in western Oakville, close to the base of the Mayacamas Mountains. The vineyard is comprised of welldrained clay loam and the vines are vertically trellised to maximize sunlight and open the canopy. The area’s warm climate and sun exposure in both the morning and afternoon are perfect for slowly ripening the fruit, which often benefits from a long hang time.

Sensory Evaluation

Bright, clear black cherry and blackberry aromas, accented by notes of toasty spice, open onto a palate layered with flavors of mixed berries, spice and earth. Elegant and balanced, with a rich backbone of oak, this concentrated vintage possesses the tremendous length, the layered flavor profile and incredible depth that we’ve come to associate with this and other west Oakville vineyards.

2015 Nickel & Nickel
Quarry Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Rutherford, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

The 25-acre Quarry Vineyard climbs the slopes above the Silverado Trail on the east side of Rutherford. The name comes from the old quarry that was the source of a white rock used in the ghost winery that still stands beside the vineyard. Three distinct hillside blocks, each experiencing its own unique soil and exposure, are harvested from this vineyard. The white, rocky loam soils are well drained, and the vines are of moderate vigor. Cluster and berry size varies from block to block, but all are small to moderate. This vineyard has full exposure to the afternoon sun.

Sensory Evaluation

Fruit-forward yet savory, the 2015 Quarry Vineyard marries notes of blackberry and black cherry with hints of tapenade and spicy cigar box both on the nose and palate. A generous swirl of the glass reveals a rich depth of aromas and flavors, all supported by long, coating tannins.

2015 Nickel & Nickel
C.C. Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon

Rutherford, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

C.C. Ranch is planted in Rutherford, along the slope of a knoll west of the Silverado Trail. The vineyard grows classic Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon on well-drained, gravelly loam soil and receives a variety of exposures, depending on the block and location. The vines are well balanced and the canopy is opened up to give good light exposure. Nickel & Nickel produces wine from 15 select acres of this 115-acre vineyard.

Sensory Evaluation

The 2015 C.C. Ranch pushes the edge of ripeness yet retains the juiciness one expects from the Rutherford AVA. Concentrated red raspberry and cherry flavors blend beautifully with subtle notes of baking spice and dust. The oak is in harmony with the fruit, adding yet another dimension, while a balanced acidity livens the wine. Resolved but present tannins will allow this elegant Cabernet to cellar beautifully for many years to come.

2015 Nickel & Nickel
Darien Vineyard Syrah

Russian River Valley, Sonoma

Vineyard Description

Tucked into the gently rolling hills of Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, Darien Vineyard enjoys a moderate climate and well-drained, loamy soils. The Syrah vines were planted in 2000 and 2001, and benefit from cool, foggy mornings that give way to warm afternoon sun from the southeast, allowing the exposed fruit to ripen evenly. The clusters tend to be fairly long in size and tightly packed. There are two different clones planted in the vineyard, each contributing its own unique flavors to the wine. Nickel & Nickel selects fruit from three-and-three-quarter acres of the 25-acre vineyard.

Sensory Evaluation

Powerful and intense, the 2015 Darien Syrah seduces with its earthy aromatics. Captivating flavors of fresh picked wild berries and crisp plum unfold on the palate alongside wet earth, cigar, toasted nuts, and forest floor. Rich flavor with supple tannins make this wine approachable upon release.

Beatty Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon

Howell Mountain, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Located atop Howell Mountain, Beatty Ranch typically gets to enjoy the warmth of the sun when summer fog lines the valley floor. While the fruit ripens easily, we must wait for mature tannins to emerge. The red, rocky soils are ideal to produce moderate-sized vines, and this vineyard is comprised of four different clones that each provide a unique flavor profile to the overall wine.

Copper Streak Cabernet Sauvignon

Stags Leap District, Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Copper Streak Vineyard is located in a protected hollow at the base of the palisades in Stags Leap District. The soils are composed of Perkins gravelly loam mixed with red, copper-like streaks, which is how the vineyard got its name. The vines receive a western exposure and are of moderate size, yielding loose clusters with small berries. The climate in Stags Leap is very warm, however, midafternoon breezes sweep in to cool things down, allowing for excellent ripening. Nickel & Nickel Copper Streak Cabernet is produced from seven of the vineyard’s 30 acres.

Element 28 Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

Element 28 is named after the owner of the vineyard, Erik Nickel, who ingeniously came up with the name Element 28, which is “nickel” on the periodic table. Located high in the hills across from Lake Henessey, this vineyard has a nice western exposure, comprised of shallow, gravelly loam soils which produce small vines with loose clusters and small berries. Three different clones offer a variety of concentrated fruit flavors that are hallmarks of this hillside vineyard.

2015 Nickel & Nickel
Suscol Ranch Merlot

Napa Valley

Vineyard Description

The nine-acre Suscol Ranch is located in Jamieson Canyon, south of the city of Napa. The area is very cool, with dense fog early in the season and windy conditions all year long. Planted on a gentle, north-facing knoll of deep, loamy soil, the vines are cordon trained to give the grapes maximum sun exposure. The cool conditions allow the fruit to mature slowly, gracefully developing flavors and mature tannins.

Sensory Evaluation

Aromas of sweet cedar, plum, and dried herb hint at the juicy flavors of plum and pomegranate in the glass. Subtle accents of green olive, earth and spice harmonize beautifully with the dark, rich fruit. Vibrant acidity helps the flavors linger on the palate, while integrated oak lengthens the finish.
