The Martin Stelling Vineyard continues to amaze us with all that it has to offer. The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon presents an exquisite nose of blackberry, spice, vanilla and chocolate notes, which are mirrored on the palate with a rich, coating texture. Classically elegant, yet concentrated and jammy, this wine shows beautiful structure and complexity. Silky tannins marry with the French oak, creating layers of interest that progress into a very long finish.

The Martin Stelling Vineyard is situated on its own alluvial fan. The combination of proper drainage with the vineyard’s finely grained soils contributes to the vineyard’s incredible consistency. The soil is comprised of clay loam soil from the Bale soil series, which are developed on alluvial fans and flood plains.
The Martin Stelling Vineyard is located at the base of the western hills in Oakville, and is the primary vineyard for Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon. Nickel & Nickel is fortunate to farm two acres of this vineyard. The soils are composed of deep volcanic loam with underlying clay and gravel.

An ideal 2012 growing season with warm days and cool, foggy nights offered the perfect conditions for fruit and tannin maturity. There were no heat spikes this year, so flavor development was at its peak. This vineyard is not overly vigorous, so adequate exposure was achieved with very little leaf pulling around the clusters. Bloom and veraison occurred two weeks ahead of last year and the vines looked ideal. The warm, summer temperatures slowly ripened this fruit and we waited until mid-October to harvest, when the blackberry flavors were sweet as jam.
