The 2013 Suscol Ranch Merlot showcases the dark color, rich flavor and coating texture characteristic of this vintage, mingled with compelling ripeness. The wine opens with dark plum, green olive and cedar aromas. Earthy notes of tobacco leaf, olive and spice blend beautifully with toasted French oak. Rich, coating tannins elevate the fruit flavors, adding a depth and complexity that few Merlots achieve. From year to year, this wine’s distinctiveness lies in the lush, velvety tannins that expand upon first sip and develop with richness through the finish.

Vertical shoot positioning (VSP)
The Haire soil series are moderately well drained and found on old terraces and alluvial fans. Deposits of weathered sedimentary rock are typical and help create a deep, loamy soil in this vineyard.
The nine-acre Suscol Ranch vineyard is located in Jamieson Canyon, south of the city of Napa. The area is very cool, with dense fog early in the season and windy conditions all year long. The vines are planted on a gentle, north-facing knoll of deep, loamy soil and are cordon trained to give the grapes maximum sun exposure. The cool conditions allow the fruit to mature slowly, gracefully developing flavors and mature tannins.
September 24 – 28, 2013
17 months in French oak
Favorable weather conditions encouraged an earlier season occurring about two weeks ahead of last year. Bloom came in early May and produced a fairly uniform crop, and veraison happened in mid-July. Ideal temperatures in south Napa quickly ripened the fruit on the vine, and we harvested this vineyard in late September when flavors hit their peak.
