The 2017 Sullenger Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon opens with beautiful plum, black cherry and plum aromas underscored by delicate notes of herb and earth. Layers of soft, juicy cherry flavors spread across the palate, while firm yet silky tannins are balanced by bright natural acidity on the finish. The resulting wine possesses a lushness and depth that is both immediately approachable yet structured to evolve beautifully over time.

Situated at the toe of an alluvial fan that extends from the western Mayacamas range, the vineyard is comprised of fluvial river deposits and clay loam soil from the Bale soil series, which are developed on alluvial fans and flood plains.
The home vineyard of Nickel & Nickel, Sullenger Vineyard is situated behind the winery in the heart of Oakville and is named for John C. Sullenger, who settled the farmstead in the 1880’s. The vineyard’s 30 acres of clay loam soil are planted exclusively to Cabernet Sauvignon, with 2 rootstocks and a few different clones which each add a unique element to the resulting wine.

The year began with a cold and much-needed wet winter, followed by a mild spring. April showers following budbreak resulted in hearty vine growth that only accelerated with the summer sun. The vineyards enjoyed a brief cooling period in August before a final heat spike over Labor Day weekend. The cool weather that immediately followed gave our fruit additional hang-time on the vine continuing phenolic development.
